The Biosafety Specialist will primarily support the biosafety program in laboratories and other facilities throughout campus in addition to general laboratory and campus wide safety programs. Assists the Biosafety Program Manager in the implementation of various elements of the biosafety program that involves the use of infectious agents, human materials, recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids and toxins. Work includes the review of biosafety registrations and risk assessments; delivery of classroom and hands-on biosafety training; and overall biosafety consultation and outreach. Additional areas are development of biosafety resources; coordination of regulated medical waste management; maintenance of records; and conducting autoclave and biosafety audits. This position will serve as a resource to lab personnel on biosafety best practices and enhance compliance with relevant local, state and federal regulations and guidelines.


Management of biosafety often presents challenges where problems encountered are often non-routine, requiring review of practices and precedents to recommend effective remedy. Often, precedents generally do not exist for most problems, thus this position requires conducting independent research/analysis to identify appropriate approach.




• Education: Bachelor’s degree required in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related field. Interest in a professional certification such as a Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biological Safety Professional is highly desirable.


• Experience: four to six years’ experience working in a research, teaching, diagnostic/ clinical or quality control laboratory. Familiarity with applicable local, state and federal regulations and guidelines is highly desired. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.


• Basic understanding of biosafety principles and practices and related knowledge of pertinent scientific fields to which the background can be applied.


• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with a wide variety of personnel with a positive and helpful attitude.


• Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to present information clearly and succinctly verbally and in writing. Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.


• Ability to take initiative and think critically and creatively about individual situations and elements of the biosafety program.


• Ability to work independently and as a member of the team.


• Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and e-mail).


• Proficiency in the use of data management software.


• Recognition of laboratory hazards, assessment of risks, and identification of effective risk management controls.


• Work effectively and productively with other EH&S staff, laboratory personnel, facilities support personnel and outside regulators.


• Evaluate laboratories for unsafe conditions and practices, and identify opportunities to reduce risks.


• Be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment.


• Lift up to 50 lbs and move up to 500 lbs of materials using rolling carts.


• Work in a variety of physical environments including weather extremes, potential confined spaces, elevated locations, and where the use of hazardous chemicals or equipment is in storage or use.
