Cooperative Education Student - Scintillation Detector Development

Job Description

Fermilab is providing an opportunity through a COOP program for undergraduate students on track to achieve a BS in the field of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science/Engineering to support the Scintillation Detector Development (SDD) effort and at the same time gain valuable hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment in the analytical and chemistry laboratory. The students will assist in tasks related to plastic scintillator R&D such as radiation damage studies, scintillation light yield improvements, and dopant synthesis. Emphasis will be placed on the study of radiation resistant plastic scintillators by testing different polymeric materials and fluorescent compounds, and by optimizing the scintillator formulations.

The two-year program provides two students with two alternating six-month onsite work-periods with the SDD group while still enrolled in college.

Term to begin: Summer 2016 / Term to end: Spring 2018.

  • Carry out day to day operations in the chemistry laboratories:
    • Perform purification of chemicals
    • Perform polymerizations
    • Prepare castings of samples
    • Operate the analytical equipment:
      • Use UV/Vis spectrophotometers and fluorimeters
      • Use GC/MS equipment
      • Use a radioactive source for scintillation light studies
      • Perform analysis of data recorded
      • Provide reports of work performed
      • Write clear and concise technical documentation with corresponding excellent oral communication skills.
      • Ability to work independently under general direction, demonstrating sound judgment and attention to duties and detail.
