Exciting growth opportunity within our Smart Meter team in the RTP, NC area! Smart Meters is part of our Product Safety and Verification Services business.

Utilize your project handling skills! Work within a customer-friendly, focused, high-performing, and devoted team to help our smart meter clients meet their world-wide compliance needs as quickly and easily as possible. This is a new growth opportunity within UL where assistance is needed to help develop new test requirements and test methods (data sheets), identify and interpret relevant compliance Standards, develop and utilize quoting tools, seek business development and sales opportunities to help grow the business, and provide ideas for continuous improvement. This role:
  • Communicates with engineering department personnel and clients regarding instructions, test methods, data, results, and the availability of equipment.
  • Communicates project status and results to clients and/or project evaluator through frequent contact and by preparing reports.
  • Operates autonomously on areas of responsibility, but within a team that assists whenever needed. Assists in the development of appropriate test requirements. Assists in developing special test methods and test equipment. Analyzes test program for adequacy and sequence.
  • May establish appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying the appropriate requirements. Is familiar with applicable standards and appropriate technical literature. Examines samples for compliance and notifies client of any areas in which the product is not in compliance or of any changes in project scope or specifications.
  • Coordinate laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and engineering assistants, and establishing completion dates. Coordinates administrative aspects of project management.
  • Communicates with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing testing services, discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, and negotiate completion test date and sample requirements. Follows up on contacts from clients. Acts to address client concerns and to resolve client issues. Provides technical assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up services.
  • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Works to understand the needs of the client to develop accurate quotes and specific scopes of work to be delivered at the conclusion of each project.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Performs other duties as directed.


Our Ideal Candidate will have a n Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology degree from an accredited university. Also,
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing equipment and techniques related to testing of electrical products.
  • Experience with ANSI and IEC based Standards is desirable.
  • Ability and desire to work well within a team environment.
  • Sense of urgency with good communication skills.
  • Experience with power distribution products, power supplies, circuit boards, and communication circuits is a plus.
  • Forward-thinking skills to help drive and grow a new business is a plus.
  • A process-improvement mindset.
  • Computer-savvy skills to help automate reports and data sheets is a plus.
