Schedule: Hours are from 7AM-3:30PM. Additional hours as needed.

Distinguishing Job Characteristics:
Provides functional supervision to assigned Grounds staff under direction of Supervisor and performs related job responsibilities. Performs semi-skilled and skilled grounds duties and trades to maintain the College grounds and properties. May serve as on call for emergency maintenance situations and snow removal. Coordinates and directs daily work for Grounds Staff at the direction of the Supervisor.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

1) Coordinates work of the Grounds staff including recycling. Prepares & executes daily work plans. Assists Supervisor in development & enhancement of team culture and customer service. Maintains open lines of communication to Supervisor and to staff.

2) Provides direction and guidance to staff regarding job methods, standards and operations. Oversees, monitors and evaluates work assignments.

3) Trains new employees and provides ongoing instruction (e.g. safety topics, equipment handling, etc.) to work teams.

4) Maintains outside premises in an attractive and safe condition. Landscape responsibilities include: Seasonal maintenance, Mowing, planting, pruning, provides lawn and bed maintenance including watering, mulching, parking lot striping, snow removal, necessary to maintain the grounds.

5) Assembles, repairs and assists in installation of structures such as exterior furniture. Develops, designs, and installs brick walkways, landscape retaining walls, patches concrete, fixes pot holes, maintains signage, maintains flags, repairs irrigation.

6) Applies fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides. Completes and maintains all required documentation (e.g. chemical applications, work orders, maintenance forms, etc.); orders and maintains adequate chemical inventory. Maintains licenses (e.g. drivers, fork-lift, pesticide and any other necessary).

7) Utilizes heavy equipment including Fork-lift, Aerial lift, bush-hog, mowers, stump grinder, trucks, utility vehicles and tractors. Also, utilizes power tools, blowers, weed eaters, hand tools, seasonal and other equipment. Preforms preventive maintenance and repair of grounds equipment.

8) Maintains all hard surfaces. Evaluates & tracks painting and striping. Paints, seals pavement, patches potholes, stripes lots, installs signs and performs general cleaning responsibilities to maintain sidewalks, parking lots, roads and building exteriors.

9) Participates in snow removal. Operates vehicles with plows or brooms, and spreaders. Utilizes shovels, snow blowers, ice picks, etc. to remove ice and snow from roadways, sidewalks, ramps and accessible areas. Applies salt, calcium and sand to various areas to melt ice and provide safer conditions.

10) Participates in planning and building phases of construction on campus grounds. Provides general maintenance support and assists with set-up during special events.

11) Contacts vendors and orders tools, parts and supplies for grounds operations. Purchases and picks up supplies and equipment needed to provide inventory to perform job effectively. Reviews purchase invoices and makes routine purchases as authorized by Grounds Supervisor.

12) Removes debris from walks, lawns and parking lots by hand and operating power vacuum sweeper. Empties trash cans on campus grounds.

13) Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and predictable attendance. Performs other related duties as required

Other Duties & Responsibilities:
Performs duties and responsibilities of staff to meet workload demands. Serves as backup and assists Police Department during building evacuations. May work at off-campus sites. Deemed an essential employee, pursuant to college Policy & Procedure.

Working Conditions:
Normal working conditions with frequent exposure to dirt, dust, debris and smells. Employee is occasionally exposed to wet, humid or other outdoor weather conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to minor cuts, burns or other situations that may cause injury. Occasional risk of electrical shock. Employee occasionally works near moving parts or in high, precarious places. Occasionally employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic materials. Employee is occasionally exposed to very loud noises.

While performing duties of this job, regularly stands, walks and uses hands to hold and control tools and equipment. The employee occasionally exhibits digital dexterity and eye-hand coordination when entering data into computer. Employee frequently lifts or exerts force on items, with varying weights of
more than 50 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: functional supervisory principles and practices; maintenance methods, tools, materials, equipment, procedures and processes; maintenance safety practices; computer software, programs and applications; city, state and federal maintenance codes. Ability to: exercise sound judgment in relieving management of administrative responsibilities; develop and maintain good working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts and general public; work independently demonstrating initiative; coordinate multiple activities and tasks; exhibit flexibility in work schedule and job tasks; maintain accurate and complete work records; identify existing or potential problems and recommend viable solutions; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; stand for extended periods of time; push, pull, lift and move objects of varying weight; identify areas in need of maintenance and determine appropriate work method; read and interpret blueprints. Skill in: delegating and functionally supervising work; verbal and written communications; application of job software programs; grounds maintenance; safe and effective operation of job related equipment and tools.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications for the position are: Associate's Degree in a closely related field with at least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in grounds maintenance; OR, more than 5 years of progressively responsible experience in grounds maintenance; OR, 2 years of experience as a Grounds Coordinator or Supervisor. State motor vehicle operator's license. Employee must be insurable to operate a vehicle, as a condition of initial and continued employment. Possession of Commercial Applicator Licensure from the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Possession of or ability to obtain forklift operator certification, hazmat, pesticide, & chemical application license.
