Reporting to the R&D Materials Development Manager, this position is responsible for supervising 3 to 5 R&D technicians of varying backgrounds & experience levels. As a part of the ITC Management Team, the incumbent is responsible for leading or supporting cross-functional teams on assigned compound development projects, and is accountable for communication and delivery of results to the broader Technology team. The Team Leader will be expected to demonstrate and model General Cable values in everything they do and instill and develop them with their team members.


  • Lead safety initiatives by example; active member of the ITC Safety Committee; contribute to JSPs, work instructions, raw material approvals and other Safety projects and documentation as require
  • Drive cost reduction, enhanced performance, and NPI compound development programs from bench scale to commercialization
  • Lead or support cross-functional project teams in production-scale compounding and prototype processing trials within GCC manufacturing facilities
  • Investigate and apply new materials technologies from a variety of suppliers
  • Work to tight deadlines as well as contribute to longer term R&D projects
  • Coordinate and execute laboratory experiments
  • Create and modify compound specifications to support the manufacture of new or existing compounds
  • Prepare informative and accurate technical reports
  • Update and maintain records/database on compound changes or modifications
  • Assign priorities to R&D technicians to keep projects to agreed-upon deadlines
  • Complete performance reviews and development plans for R&D technicians in consultation with ITC Managers

  • Qualified candidates will possess a minimum of a B.S. degree in a scientific or engineering field such as Chemistry, Chemical or Polymer Engineering, Materials Science or related disciplines. Advanced degree preferred
  • A minimum of 4 years research and development experience; prior wire & cable and/or polymeric compounding experience preferred

    Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Works out of a normal office environment with standard office equipment available.
  • Will be required to sit, bend, kneel, squat, use keyboard, read, write, and speak fluently.
  • Employee will regularly be required to lift and carry objects of 10-25 pounds as needed.
  • Employee will occasionally be required to lift and carry objects of 25-30 pounds as needed.
  • Employee will be required to work productively and cooperatively in a high-volume, fast paced, highly pressured environment and be able to respond efficiently and courteously to unanticipated problems and crisis.
  • This role is not typically exposed to adverse environmental conditions, except excessive eye strain and possible lifting injuries
  • When travel is necessary, will be exposed to typical travel environment and surroundings
