How will you make an impact in this role?

We are looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to lead the engineering and design of critical American Express mainframe applications and infrastructure in conjunction with solving high impact incidents, tuning and debugging of applications and databases using the mainframe platform.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide Follow the Sun production support of our zOS and zLinux platform infrastructure and applications ensuring proper issue management and root cause analysis/remediation
  • Engineering large/complex projects with a variety of components and integration points.
  • Participate in brainstorming and discovery exercises to determine new technologies based on research, proof of concept efforts and independent investigation
  • Interact with business and vendor partners to better understand their objectives, landscape and/or how to identify and solve complex problems/issues
  • Interact with Infrastructure and Application Engineers and Architects to exploit new mainframe technologies such as OpenShift on Z, Containers, Data Virtualization, zOS Connect API, Java, Encryption, Sysplex, Hybrid Cloud, High Availability, Active/Active and mainframe networking
  • Work with Engineers and Kyndryl to define solution requirements, configurations, performance analysis, and/or hands-on implementation
  • Conduct infrastructure performance and security assessments
  • Ensure engineering is consistent with engineering standards, guidelines and principles
  • Actively participate in team architecture and engineering discussions and forums as a prominent contributor
  • Employs expertise to help team members overcome systemic problems during production outages and solution delivery
  • Ensures compliance with architectural, regulatory, and strategic standards, policies, and procedures
  • Actively uplifts platforms and applications using current agile practices (dev/ops)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8+ years engineering experience working in a mainframe environment.
  • High School 
  • Experience with design and implementation of mainframe and distributed applications
  • Experience with mainframe infrastructure, z-platform and z/OS technologies hardware and operating systems, application development and control of mainframe architecture, middleware and tooling
  • Experience with new mainframe technologies such as Java, Encryption, Sysplex, Hybrid Cloud, High Availability, Active/Active and Mainframe Networking 
  • Experience with problem solving, analytical analysis, monitoring with Splunk, Dynatrace, Omegamon, and presentation to senior leaders and key collaborators

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience indirectly leading a  geographically dispersed team that is composed of colleagues and contractors located across the US and India
  • Strong industry knowledge of the latest technologies and its relevance to the American Express environment
  • Deep subject matter domain expertise and knowledge of application processes and business flows
  • Ability to manage, influence and drive vendor direction to deliver innovated solutions that are beneficial to American Express
  • Demonstrated exemplary personal integrity and ability to build trust and collaborate across an organization
  • A superior ability to motivate and inspire team members to deliver on commitments
  • Ability to adapt a message to the appropriate audience
  • Strong critical thinking and decision making skills
  • Experience in Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, or related math/science field
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work well in a diverse team-focused environment
  • Liaise between Mainframe, development, Product Owners, and other partner teams to improve performance and availability
  • Ability to build positive relationships with your team, business and technology partners to achieve established goals
  • Ability to effectively interpret technical/business objectives and challenges and articulate solutions
  • Influence and lead team members with creative thought leadership with data driven changes and improvements by challenging status quo
  • Experience with effectively communicating to internal business clients and leadership on each facet of issue handling including (but not limited to): issue identification, service restoration, solutions to permanently resolve to ensure high levels of ongoing service etc.

Salary Range: $110,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
