Veterinary Technician I - SA OR - S00392FY18

The Veterinary Technician I, under supervision, assists in the treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under the supervision of a professional staff member or Veterinary Technician II or higher. Provides assistance to the professional staff and helps to maintain a sanitary and functionally well organized service within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or a related area.  Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. No experience required.  Basic or higher computer skills and experience with Excel spreadsheets, and word. Technicians in this position should have a general understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital such as arthroscopy video towers, electrosurgery, LigaSure and stapling devices. Basic understanding and or training and experience in central sterile instrument processing.  Technicians in this position should have basic knowledge in sterile and aseptic technique, and how to decontaminate instruments. The technician must be able to multi-task and work cooperatively with others and be flexible and tolerant to frequent task changes.  Technicians in this position may be required to work alternate shifts based on the surgery schedule or other assignments as needed. Other shifts include, but are not limited to the 9a-6p, 10a-7p, or 11a-8p shifts.  Technicians in this position will be required to work holidays, weekends, and “on call” duty on nights or weekends. Technicians in this position must follow the emergency call policy and respond within 30 minutes of an emergency call to report of duty. Technicians in this position should have no inhibiting allergies to animal hair, dander, dust, or cleaning products that may prevent completion of job tasks.  Technicians in this position must have the ability to lift heavy loads. Technicians in this position should be able to shift gears quickly and effectively when they are reassigned at a moment’s notice in this fast paced environment. The technician should be able to prioritize the new assignment and begin the task immediately. Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.
